Pains – Types, Risk Factors & Homeopathy

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience which considerably interferes with a person’s quality of life and general functioning. It relates to a sensation which hurts and is a chief symptom in many medical conditions.

Generally, most of the pains resolve rapidly once the painful stimulus is removed and the body has healed, but at times the pain may continue even after the removal of the stimulus and the perceptible healing of the body. At times it is observed that the pain arises even in the absence of any stimulus, damage or disease. Pain can be steady and constant; it can be a throbbing pain, a pulsating pain or a pinching or stabbing pain.

  • Acute pain – Can be intense and short-lived and can be an indication of an injury. Usually it is observed that the pain disappears when the injury heals.

 

  • Chronic pain – Chronic pain lasts much longer as compared to acute pain. It can be either mild or intense.

 

  • Visceral pain – Originates in the viscera (organs) and is usually difficult to locate.

 

  • Referred pain – Pain is present in an area distant to the site of the stimulus.

 

  • Neuropathic pain – Neuropathic pain or nerve pain is caused because of damage or disease affecting the nervous system.

 

  • Psychogenic pain – This type of pain is caused, increased, or prolonged by mental, emotional, or behavioral factors.

 

  • Somatic pain – This type of pain felt on the skin, muscle, joints, bones and ligaments Pain felt on the skin, muscle, joints, bones and ligaments is called somatic pain.

 

  • Bone Pain – Here, the bones of the body can be a source of pain.

 

Nature of Pains

The nature of pains can be varying. Some of the nature of pains are described as burning, Cutting, tingling, Stitching, Stinging, pricking, Drawing, Pulling, Twisting, Digging, Boring, Radiating, lancinating, electrical, stabbing, Cramping, Grabbing, Jerking, Contracted, Constricted, Band – like, Compressive, Crushing, Squeezing, pinching, Gnawing, Tearing, Wandering, Shifting, Erratic, Throbbing, Pulsating, etc.

What aches, colics and pains possibly manifest?

There are several conditions which manifest pains, some of them are as follows:-

  • Arthritis – This condition affects the joints, which gives rise to pain and swelling.

 

  • Chronic Headache – Pain is caused due to several different factors such as Emotional tension, anxiety, tiredness or stress; Physical factors such as bright sunlight, cold, heat, noise; Physical tension in the muscles of the scalp and neck; etc. It is estimated that 4% to 5% of the general population is affected with chronic headache.

 

  • Fibromyalgia – This condition is associated with pain in the muscles, ligaments & tendons which can be due to certain causes such as mental fatigue and disturbances in sleep.

 

  • Muscle pain – This pain arises due to inflammation in the adjacent areas of certain muscles. The common causes of muscle pain are overuse or over-stretching of a muscle or a group of muscles.

 

  • Migraine – This type of pain may be acute and is unbearable at times. Migraine pain is caused due to vasodilatation in the cranial blood vessels. There are several factors which may give rise to the occurrence of migraine pains. Some such trigger factors are diet, sleep, activity, psychological issues, etc.

 

  • Sciatica – In this condition pain begins in the hip and buttocks and continues all the way down the leg.

Cervical pain is present in the cervical region. Neck pain which occurs over a long period of time, usually more than six months is known as cervical pain.
